May’s second visit, to what is sadly showing increasing signs of becoming a storage facility. 

The 4 remaining deferred Kingfisher Airlines A340-500s (MSNs 0886, 0894, 0902 & 0912) were still parked in the open, their fates uncertain although one for HiFly/Arik Air has subsequently been delivered. 

One of the two stored A340-600s for Iberia (MSN0960) has rejoined production, being seen complete with engines on the flight line.  The other (MSN0993), however, remains in deep-storage on the A380 apron. 

The 2 potential KC-45As (MSNs 0925, and 996) remain in open storage, engineless.  On the plus side, -200MRTT MSN0980 was not seen, so is hopefully back in production, and the first example for the AirTanker consortium for the RAF was seen – with engines – on the production flightline. 

There are now signs of deferrals for airline-destined 330s with the recently assembled MSN1031 parked outside wearing a coat of tell-tale yellow storage primer.  Another, fresh off the FAL, MSN1034 was noted being painted in the open-air with the same protective coating.  This was originally allocated to AirComet, as was MSN1042 which was seen on the FAL and is presumably destined for the same treatment on rollout. 

A single A320, MSN3882 was noted also painted for storage?  Iberia ntu?  On the positive, one of the two long-stored 320s for Kingfisher, MSN3621, was noted at the delivery centre still wearing basic Kingfisher colours so is hopefully about to start earning its living. 

Happily, there were no signs of storage over at the 380 plant, with a record 5 aircraft seen on the production flight line.  2 examples each for Air France (MSN0040 & 0043) and Emirates (MSN0007 & 0028) plus one for Qantas (MSN0047).  Another, MSN0021, the 7th for Singapore Airlines was also seen over at the ZIEGLER DC awaiting its delivery flight.  

Being on foot and taking an A380 tour with Concorde No.1 option to provide access to the plant, recording of the various movements is not as complete as usual.  Apologies for this.

May’s first visit, this time with car and not one but two good friends, so everything that could be seen was recorded.  

A good amount of flying was witnessed, including the delivery of Finnair’s latest A330 OH-LTO.  Their next was also duly noted on its return from Chateauroux, freshly painted.  Add to that the arrival of no less than 3 A320s from Hamburg Finkenwerder after cabin installation which made for an action-packed day.

April’s second, this time on foot, with a single tour (Mach II)  booked to provide access to the main plant.  

A week after my last visit it was especially pleasing to witness the roll-out of the first A330MRTT for the UK Royal Air Force, the unmated components having been seen entering the FAL previously. 

A similar event may have occured with the latest ATR72 destined for the Brasilian airline TRIP Linhas Aereas which was seen entering the paint hall the previous week. This is to be confirmed as it was witnessed from the palne as we taxied to the gate so could not be confirmed by the naked eye.  These two events, plus the arrival of the hoped-for Asiana A320 just as I cleared security, phew… more than compensated for the variable weather conditions.

April’s first visit, this time with car and a full afternoon of tours (MACH II and J.L. LAGARDERE A380) to provide access to the main plants.  

In addition to this, a number of ‘firsts’ were also witnessed: the positioning into the mating jig of the front-fuselage section of the first A330MRTT for the UK Royal Air Force, the ‘birth’ of an A330: MSN1031, delivery of the latest for Singapore Airlines, yet another ATE swap-over: this time an A320 in the stunning new SATA Internacional scheme, followed by a primer ATR72 going in.  Add to that the rollout of an Iberia A340-600 in storage primer, departure of an S7 A320 to Finkenwerder and preparations – complete with palms – for the delivery of the latest ATR72 for Air Tahiti all made for an action-packed day.

March’s first visit, this time travelling in style via Frankfurt and the delights of Lufthansa CityLine.  Being a Sunday there was little activity at the plant, however with wheels and mostly empty roads, it was easy to note – and photograph just about everything that was visible.  Hangar doors remained firmly shut for the most part, but this was compensated by the packed ramps, especially at l’aubrevouir and St. Martin du Touch. 

Arriving close to midnight gave some interesting views of the A380 (J.L. Lagardere) FAL – see photos – which thanks to the lights would not have been possible otherwise. 

An interesting new raised vantage point was discovered overlooking the rear of the main plant at Chemin de Gramont.  This spot has real potential if the C. ADER FAL is open and is recommended to anyone visiting with wheels.
